This is the greatest answering machine message anyone’s ever left for me. But how could it not be?
It took me a couple of weeks to get Hunter Thompson on the phone. I was on assignment for a magazine that had recently laid me off. The editors contracted me to do the interview half out of pity and half because they thought they could get away with paying me half of what they paid their usual freelancers. The magazine bought pictures of Thompson from some photographer friend of his; Hunter only did the interview out of obligation to his buddy.
I called Colorado about half a dozen times before Thompson left me this message. The whole interview is still online at Freezerbox. That long-form version was published in the Thompson interview collection Ancient Gonzo Wisdom, a book I’d endorse even if I wasn’t in it.
I found this on a cassette tape in a basement that’s been flooded over at least three times in the last decade.
