  1. Many years’ worth of sad days to come before then. Um, what i mean is, that day won’t be soon. We’ll forget JFK and Mussolini sooner. And Cher. Actually, I’m already getting a little hazy on Cher. Was there was a context to your apocalyptic vision that i missed? Or are you shouting “Burning Hell” in a crowded theater just to see if you’ll be arrested?

  2. Well, the background is that I was going to make an aside about John Lee Hooker in something I was writing and, to my burning shame, blanked on his name. Then I googled “boom boom” and that amazing youtube video came up. I thought “wow, that’s everything Jack White pantomimes when he goes onstage. And even though I like Jack White, it’s not the same.

But I am far less worried about JFK or Mussolini. Old Jack is shrouded in sexual mystique and conspiratorial intrigue. Benito’s shadow still looms over Italy. And there are so many Chers that even if we forget the super pretty big nose ’60s TV version, there’s still the disco Cherokee singer of the ’70s and the surprisingly respectable “Moonstruck”/Mask-era Oscar caliber actress.

I don’t know. I guess I really am worried John lee Hooker will slip from memory. George Thorogood has spent about 30 years arguing that Hooker’s songs are shitty. Maybe it would finally take.
